The Forgotten Ones are spoken of in hushed tones for multiple reasons. Often the Elari who fail to rise from their torpor are the greatest and most powerful Elari, godlike beings who have accumulated such a wealth of knowledge, power, and history that torpor seems to have been insufficient to restore them to sanity. They are the boogiemen of the Elari: dark lords who have slumbered since antiquity, with motivations and goals long since forgotten, and powers so dark they are best forgotten.

One of the most common ways young Elari spend their time plotting for power in the Elari cities is to delve deep into the Undercities, looking for citadels sealed and dusty, housing forbidden lore and secrets. Finding a storehouse of magic might be enough to elevate a lowly Elari to a position of authority, perhaps even a Council seat. In the past these young delvers have occasionally broken into a crypt with a slumbering Forgotten One. A hasty retreat is the most common reaction, but the more adventurous or risky Elari might attempt to loot the bounty of equipment or grimoires the Elari left behind to restore their power and memory.

A Forgotten One waking is not unlike any other torpor, but the confusion is far more intense. Depending on the duration of the slumber they may have no memory of their own name, or purpose. Even core fundamental powers may have been lost. If the duration was long enough, many of their preparations will have failed. Spells designed to extend the life of documents and papers long since expired leave only moldering piles of dust. Artifacts once shiny and bright with harnessed magical power have dulled and sputtered out with age. In the worst scenarios, the awakened ancient Elari has a sort of amnesia, with no true memories, only an unspoken drive for something they cannot articulate. If their magical powers have dulled they may have the mentality and attitude of a god-like being accustomed to immediate obedience, but without the raw sorcerous power to compel it. A Forgotten One awakening in this manner must be ever on his guard, for few Elari would grant him the opportunity to recover his powers and become a formidable threat.
